ccording to a new survey obesity rates are on the up across America with the state of Mississippi continuing to lead the way.
(The survey was put together by the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and has some scarey findings.)

(a)The survey found that in 31 US states, 1 in 4 Americans are either overweight or obese.

(b)In 23 states, the rate of obesity rose this past year, and so did the percentage of obese people over the age of 65, dBTechno reports.

(c)It was found that the fattest states are Mississippi, with nearly one-third of adults, and 44.4 percent of children ages 10 to 17 considered obese. West Virginia, Alabama, and Tennessee all have rates just above 30 percent for adult obesity.

(d)Thinnest residents reside in the states of Colorado, at 18.9 percent; Massachusetts at 21.2 percent; and Connecticut at 21.3 percent.

Children obese or overweight weigh in at 30 percent nationwide. Overweight and obese adults account for 32.5 percent of the U.S population. Obesity along among adults exceeds 25 percent in 31 states.
By comparison, in 1991, not one state had an obesity rate above 20 percent, InjuryBoard.com reports.
Reacting obesity rates rising James Marks, the foundation’s senior vice president said: “The only good news is that the pace of the epidemic growth is lessening. We’re still getting fatter, but maybe a little bit more slowly than before,” eFitnessNow reports.

It starts in childhood. Chances are if there is all those restaraunts there is also a grocer with some good portable produce and the like. I was blessed as a child to be allergic to chocolate, and therefore never developed the tatste for sweets like I see in many. My brother has ample fruits available for his kids. When they go to grandma's they have a choice between the cookies or the fruits, 8 out of 10 times they go for the fruits.

ok so this is Bermuda, but the guy was American, I can guarOntee!!

Cook at home and teach your children to cook. One of the best things my parents taught me was how to cook.

I'm not sure what part of the country you live in, Chang, but I can assure you that there are NOT "at least 7" of those within three miles of every highway exit in the southeastern United States.

Baleigh - Good point. I'm amazed at how many teens can't do much past boil water. (I taught my boys early on that the way to impress women is to be able fix decent meals - and it's the truth!)

My baby, the last one left at home, is going through the teenage "I am immortal" stage - but I have faith that someday soon he'll fall back on his parents "treat your body like a temple, not an amusement park" method of thinking. He still likes fruit and veggies, and at least when he eats at home, I know it's a balanced meal.

He's never been overweight, by any measure - he's tall and athletic like his dad - but I have to admit, I cringe whenever he brings home poptarts and soft drinks. He refuses to do yoga or go for a run with me, but he does bicycle and swim, and occasionally use the weight bench - and his chores require muscle work.

I've found that the way to him is through his girlfriend - so I'm teaching HER how to cook healthy *s*
