Hi hon, when i am coloring i use the free hand selection or laso. i outline the article of clothing or hair with the laso. i then choose Manual Color Correction, which gives you several different colors to play around with, if you want the color darker just repeat the color choise.

Hope this helps, you can page me if you have questions.

Also, i am sure there are other iconeers who might have a different way of doing it ~winks~

Hi there ...

I make a copy and place it over the original, in case I need to erase
or bring down the opacity.

Then I enlarge the image, and use the tool in PSP change to target ...
and color using this.

Then I merge the layers, after erasing anything I may need to do.

If I can help further, just let Me know *Smiles*

What I do in adobe photoshop is:

Lasso the area I want to color
Copy
Paste new layer
Go to Image, Adjustment, Color Balance and then, using the slider, find the color I want
If needed to be a darker color..or lighter..go to image, adjustment, Brightness/Contrast
Erase the excess
Again if needed blend with the background

i know of several ways to do it, including those mentioned above. my preferred method is kind of the backwards way to do it.

i too make a copy and place it over the original to start with.

then i go up to adjust -> color balance -> color balance and hit the random button (that button with the lil cube lookin' thing on it, next to the buttons with the eye on them) until i find a color i like. it'll color the entire image, obviously.

next i use the eraser brush and erase out all the parts of the image i don't want colored, letting the original copy of the image underneath the colored stuff show through.

you could also go to adjust -> hue and saturation -> colorize and then pick/apply what color you want, then erase what you don't want colored afterward.

of course, this is often a very time consuming practice depending on the image. my mouse has issues with using the freehand tool so i try to avoid it. -laughs-

Wow, so many different ways to get the same effect.

I use a completely different way.

I begin by adding a new raster layer.

Then I pick the colour I want, go to my paint brush and lower the opacity to between 47-52%. Doing this allows the folds of the material, lines in the face, whatever, to show through.

I then paint the area. If the area is large and I can't finish it all in one step, I switch to push tool, which is found under the retouch button. I do this because when using the paintbrush, if you need to stop and start again, the opacity will double in any areas you paint over twice, using the push tool eliminates this problem.

After I have the area all painted, I go to my layers and change the mode to hard light/soft light, burn, several different options, which will allow all the areas I don't want to show up, and I erase in several different modes to assure I have all stray pixels of colour.

Often times I will duplicate that colour layer and use a couple of different blend modes, maybe a hard light beneath a soft light layer, changing the opacity of each layer until I get what I am looking for.

I've found that especially useful for hair colour and colourizing leather, although I readily admit I can't get that super high gloss the way Trinna does.

Darn, mine seems complicated, but it works for me.

Going to try out some of these others methods now!

Thanks ladies!!

edits to change the icon because I wanted to use one that I took from blonde to a redhead.

I have basically used variations of all of these methods, but I guess the one I use most, cause I am a filter whore ~G, is a combination of allura's and cath's, and too work backwards. I will duplicate the black and white and work off that image. I use the hue and saturation adjust to color the entire image the color I want, then will work with various filters depending on whether I want a muted color or a sharp color, or an intense one. I normally use DCE Tools or Beautifier to get the desired effect. Then I paste the black and white back over the colored one, erase out where I want the color, and then go to layer properties to choose the blend mode, blend range, and opacity when merging the layers.

I used DCE on this one I am wearing for a muted effect and blended in soft light on the layer properties...and this one I made for tori, I used beautifier to get the intense color and I believe I blended in luminance under properties.
