| | | | | i have to say, before all of you started doing this, i hadn't given much thought to how much breast cancer had affected my life.....i lost an aunt to breast cancer back when i was a kid and back then, it didn't really mean that much to me, i was too young to truly understand the impact of breast cancer......
i've grown up since then and now have a beautiful daughter of my own....and after reading the articles posted here, i've opened my eyes and realized that not only do i need to take care of myself, i need to ensure that my daughter takes care of herself as well! Breast cancer awareness is something that BOTH of us should be practicing, so this afternoon, when she and i have some quiet time together, i fully intend to talk to her, to share some of the articles here with her and to let her know how important it is that she and i both take care of ourselves.....thank you from the both of us and from the Men in our lives who love us or will love us in the future (she's not allowed to date yet! *lol*)

Men, not only do you need to be there to support your women, but be aware of your own breasts.
It CAN happen to you as well!
My Dad, yes, i said my Dad, is a breast cancer survivor. Due to his regular visits with his doctor it was discovered. Thankfully, he had just changed to this doctor who was concerned about other health issues and saw him regularly. It took us all by surprise when the lump was discovered. After a series of chemo to reduce the mass, surgery to remove it and the many nodes that were infected and then radiation, he is alive today.
Because you men have less breast tissue, early detection IS truly the key!!!
So be aware of your bodies as well
You CAN survive it too!!

| | | | | my grandma had breast cancer and ended up having her breasts removed.. she's no longer with us though as she passed away a year before my dad passed away...
the sad thing though is my grandma's breast cancer was already in the late stages, so chemo wouldn't have helped her at all

If your mother, grandmother or sisters have had breast cancer, you may too. In your grief (and, sometimes mourning) you may forget this but it's imperative to be screened if anyone in your immediate family has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Two genes - BRCA1 and BRCA2 - which normally suppress tumours are linked with breast cancer (along with other illnesses and diseases which gave to do with reproductive organs such as ovarian cancer) when certain strains which do not operate correctly are present.
But, just because you do not have these strains at the present time, doesn't mean they may not mutate overtime and become the dysfunctional strains.
Also, breast cancer is not just inherited from your mother's genes. Your father could be a carrier and you may inherit these strains from your paternal genetics. That's right, even if your father does not have breast cancer, it can be in his genes so it's important to know the health history of both your parents as much as possible.
When to Consider Testing What are the family characteristics that would raise suspicion that you might have a mutation in a susceptible gene and so be a candidate for genetic testing? Here is a list of preliminary questions:
1. Have you or a relative been diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer at an early age? 2. Has a relative, regardless of age, been diagnosed with breast AND ovarian cancer? 3. Do you have any male relative with breast cancer? 4. Do you have two or more relatives with breast or ovarian cancer?

| | | | | I would like to acknowlege Robin Roberts, journalist and Good Morning America co-anchor. She has kept Breast Cancer in the forefront for many months by sharing her experience. She is warm and so genuine in her passion. I've also read her book,"From the Heart: Seven Rules To Live By." She is truly inspirational.
Robin was diagnosed with breast cancer in July, 2007. She said:
she examined herself and found a lump on her breast the same day she had done a report on former "GMA" movie critic Joel Siegel, who died of colon cancer last month
Over the last few month's many of us have had Robin on in our homes every morning. She is looking healthy and strong. She never fails to promote awareness at every opportunity.
