| | | | It's Autism Awareness Month and I would like to open the forum up to discussing it.
The Sundance Channel is presenting a short film documentary all month called Autism Every day. It follows the lives of eight families with autistic children as they deal with social pressures and the financial burden. It was very educational and I learned so much about Autism from it.
I promised GentleMaster I would contribute to this cause. Is anyone interested in organizing this for the Pork Community? |

| | | | This was from something posted elsewhere. It's about Carly, a girl with autism that has learned to use a messenger program to communicate with people.
This is the news story.
This was a reader's response to it:
Reading that gave me a great deal of insight and radically changed my perception on autism. I can now only begin to understand the frustration that parents with autistic children have when they want to understand and communicate with their child, but can't. I can not fathom living in a state where I wanted so badly to communicate with my friends and family but nothing I say makes sense to them. I can not imagine an existence where I scream, pound on things or "act out" in other ways that I consciously do not want but have no control over.
I am an asshole, at times a very callous one. However, reading this, I freely admit I wept. I do not pity this young woman but it saddens me that there exists a sentient human consciousness that is literally trapped in her body. More to the point, that there's a little girl who wants to just be a little girl without people staring at her. Who wants to have an existence where she can play games without difficulty or just have friends her own age.
